How can Japanese traditions be brought into the modern day home?

Project Outline

The project objective was to design and build a functional, lightweight, and visually compelling stool. The size was restricted to 20" x 20" x 20", and the stool was required to hold 200lbs.

Design Statement

My design aims to create a stool inspired by chado (the Way of Tea), a traditional Japanese matcha ceremony. By connecting with the traditional architectural environment, the stool aims to bring Japanese traditions into the modern-day home.

Design Insights

Tradition

The goal of the design is to honor the heritage and cultural essence of Japanese traditions. The elements of the stool aim to translate Japanese tea ceremonies and their meditative nature into contemporary homes.

Convenience

Although the stool intends to bring forth traditional values, it is also designed to balance portability and functionality so that it can be brought out when needed and used as an ornate piece when not in use. Ensuring the stool is lightweight and easy to handle will make its usage more convenient.

Aesthetics

An emphasis on simplicity and harmony will be expressed through the design. The elegance of Japanese culture should be accentuated through the visuals presented by the stool. A minimalist form that intentionally uses natural materials will express the core principles of chado.
